The NiRV is a revision of the NIV for easier reading. No major changes were made in text, and the translation philosophy is generally the same. My obvservation is that besides use of simpler vocabulary, sentences have been shortened. There is also considerable gender neutral language, which has been the source of some controversy. (Don't confuse this with the TNIV which was created by the same committee as the NIV, and revises the text somewhat more than the NiRV. TNIV also uses some gender neutral language.)
